Whilst.

There’s something about this word that just gets me…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a pretentious person.

My favorite color? Blue.

My favorite Food? Nutter Butter Wafers. These things will make me lie like a criminal trying to avoid jail when questioned about having them.

Not pretentious, at all.

But…. Whilst.

The other day I was having a casual conversation with an individual that I’ve known for some time and there’s this word… I mean, I know this person, have known this person for a fairly long time. I’m familiar with this person and how they talk, their mannerisms, their speech etc…

Whislt.

The first time they used it I thought, “that’s odd”, but just kept going with the conversation. A short while later they used it again.

Now I’m beginning to think this person is messing with me. They know me, certainly they’re going to know I’ve picked up their use of this word. I mean, honestly, this is exactly the kind of word this person should know I’m going to notice… It’s just not a common phrase word…

Like: mayhaps, m’lady, or forsooth.

Then they used it again. Now I’m distracted trying to figure out why they’re using a word they wouldn’t normally use. What other odd word will they try to throw out there next? How many times will this person use this word? Is this person messing with me or seriously trotting out this word like nothing is out of the ordinary?

Whilst.

At this point I’ve about lost my place in the conversation and what is being said. Honestly, I don’t even know what we’re talking about at this point. Worse, I know that the last thing this person said was a question and is looking at me for a response. I use my best “I’m thinking about that” while nodding my head while hoping they will continue on or change conversational direction. The tactic either worked or they just gave up, taking me for an idiot, and the conversation takes a new topic and I recover.

Unfortunately, that word pops up again a little while later. It’s at this point I realize that this person isn’t messing with me… So now I’ve got to mess with them. I start using the word… I would love to say that I’m a better person than this but I am simply who I am; that and I’m intrigued as to how long they will go before calling me on my present course of action.

Whilst.

I was amazed that they did not notice that I was using their word. I tried to come up with ways to use it more often, tried to find ways to get them to say it but they seemed oblivious. I was almost to the point of wanting to point it out, like Austin Powers and the Mole, when they have to leave.

Catastrophe averted.

For now…

Cheers!
